HPI (high intellectual potential)

High intellectual potential (HPI) is an atypical way of thinking: fast, branching thought, hypervigilance, frequent emotional intensity. It is neither an illness nor a guarantee of academic success.

What is useful to know:

  • A need for meaning before getting down to work.
  • Boredom that becomes painful when a task is repetitive.
  • Real mental fatigue after a "normal" day.

A brain that moves fast, links everything to everything, and does not know how to switch off. It is not "being smarter": it is thinking differently, often more intensely, often at a greater cost in energy.

What shows, what does not

You notice the wide curiosity, the questions that go beyond the frame, the speed of reasoning on a subject of interest. You see much less of the mental fatigue, the perfectionism that paralyses, impostor syndrome, or the quiet disengagement when a task no longer makes sense.

HPI does not mean "good at everything"

HPI guarantees neither academic nor professional success. Many people with HPI struggle at school (boredom, social mismatch) or at work (meaning, rigid hierarchy, repetitive tasks). It is often identified late, sometimes in adulthood, after burnout.

Often combined with other forms of neurodivergence

HPI frequently coexists with ADHD, autism, DYS conditions (dyslexia and related learning differences) or hypersensitivity (HPE, high emotional potential). This is sometimes called a "twice-exceptional" profile: strengths and difficulties overlap without cancelling each other out.

Possible accommodations

Practical adjustments, no medical equipment needed:

  • At work: clear goals rather than imposed procedures, autonomy over the "how", varied tasks, respect for deep-focus time.
  • At school: differentiated teaching (skipping a grade can be considered but is not automatic), access to richer content on the subjects that drive motivation.
  • At home: accept early existential questions, respect the need to withdraw after stimulation, do not confuse mental fatigue with laziness.
  • Day to day: anticipate changes, explain unwritten rules, leave quiet spaces to "come back down".

Explanations based on your profile

Help others understand

Living with the HPI (high intellectual potential): the context set, the conversation freed.

You write your profile once. At every new school year, every new team, every new care professional, you share the QR code, without having to repeat everything every time. The conversation continues, it just starts from a different point.
