Hyperlexia
Hyperlexia is an early and advanced ability to decode written words, often before age 5, beyond what is expected at that age. Comprehension, however, can remain slower and more literal.
What is useful to know:
- Reading does not mean understanding: beware of the trap of "he is ahead".
- Strong attraction to letters, numbers, logos.
- Often associated with autism, sometimes on its own.
A child who reads fluently at 4, and who is then asked to tell the story: no answer. Hyperlexia is when decoding races ahead, and understanding moves at its own pace.
What shows, what does not
You notice the fluent reading, the obsessive interest in letters or numbers, the memorising of signs and slogans. You see much less of the difficulty in answering an open question, making inferences, or following an implicit story.
Hyperlexia and autism
Hyperlexia frequently accompanies autism, but not always. In every case, school learning can be skewed: the child may read instructions but not decode them socially, and answer off the mark without noticing the gap.
A strength when supported
With good support, hyperlexia becomes a learning lever: reading to access meaning, written rather than spoken materials, pictograms and short texts to make instructions feel safe.
Possible accommodations
Practical adjustments, no medical equipment needed:
- At school: do not confuse decoding with comprehension, check meaning with concrete questions, rely on written instructions.
- At home: let them read what they are passionate about (encyclopedias, logos, catalogues), retell stories together, ask simple open questions.
- Day to day: give rules in writing, display the steps, use pictograms for sequences, do not be surprised by a "yes" that does not mean "I understood".
